Neurodegenerative Disease Herbal Support

Recent studies indicate Cistanche tubulosa may provide substantial neurodegenerative disease herbal support, including support for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

A recent compilation study in Frontiers in Pharmacology reviews growing evidence that Cistanche tubulosa may inhibit neurodegenerative disease progression, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), and vascular dementia. The study, published in February 2022, strongly suggest that Echinacoside (ECH) in Cistanche tubulosa exhibits a variety of beneficial effects associated with neuronal function, including protecting mitochondrial function, reducing anti-oxidative stress and anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), and regulating autophagy.

Neurodegenerative Disease Herbal Support

Neuronal damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are common pathogenesis features of neurodegenerative diseases, which often manifest as memory and cognitive impairment.

ECH is a natural phenylethanoid glycoside (PhG) in Cistanche tubulosa. A large number of studies have shown that ECH has very promising potential in the inhibition of neurodegenerative disease progression. Additional studies are warranted to further investigate ECH as an efficacious and safe substance for counteracting neurodegenerative disease.

Echinacoside is a phenylethanoid glycoside (PhG), and was first extracted from the rhizome of Echinacea angustifolia DC. A key component of Echinacea, it’s also abundant in other natural plants, such as Cistanche tubulosa. In fact, Cistanche tubulosa contains the highest content of ECH. ECH has shown a variety of important pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, protection of mitochondrial function, anti-oxidation, anti-neurotoxicity, anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), anti-apoptosis, and neuroprotective effects.

To date, the therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases focuses mainly on improving symptoms, making the search for viable neurodegenerative disease herbal support directed at the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease all the more important.
