Can it provide support for Parkinson’s disease?
A 2020 study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology revealed the mechanism of Paeonia lactiflora in supporting treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The study showed how Paeonia lactiflora, also called Chinese Peony and White Peony Root, may contribute to novel drug development for the disease.
According to the study, Paeonia lactiflora may provide support for common neurodegenerative diseases by slowing neurodegeneration and thus reducing neuroinflammation and inhibiting intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis. It may also improve motor and non-motor symptoms by regulating the levels of neurotransmitters.
Can it support treatment for psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin inflammatory condition. Macrophages T-helper cells and neutrophils provoke inflammation, resulting in skin lesions. Paeoniflorin extracted from Paeonia’s roots has been found effective in providing natural anti-inflammatory support in the treatment of this autoimmune condition.
Although the herb has proved effective against psoriasis, clinical studies are still being conducted to determine the mechanism of relieving infiltrated immune cells. Some studies show that Paeoniflorin reduces the number of macrophages (F4/80(+)CD68(+), hence regulating cytokine production. The bioactive ingredient also suppresses neutrophils and inhibits the expression of inflammatory protein-2.
Can it support treatment for Sjögren’s Syndrome?
Sjögren’s syndrome refers to a systemic autoimmune condition where lymphocytes infiltrate the exocrine glands. This condition often occurs alongside other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. The Journal of Clinical Rheumatology indicates that TGPs may be effective in the primary treatment of Sjögren’s syndrome. The natural anti-inflammatory properties help to alleviate dryness of the mouth and eyes and reduce the fatigue that usually occurs among patients with this condition.
Does it support eye health?
Paeonia supports healthy vision by reducing the incidence of dry eye.
Are the health benefits of White Peony Root backed by science?
The short answer is “yes.”
A 2020 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology concludes that total glucosides of paeony (TGP), the main active ingredient of the root of the Paeonia lactiflora plant, may help to regulate anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. The study, titled “Total Glucosides of Paeony: A Review of Its Phytochemistry, Role in Autoimmune Diseases, and Mechanisms of Action,” reviews Paeonia anti inflammation potential and highlights the clinical efficacy of TGP in providing support for immune diseases. It also provides a reference for the continued scientific study of TGP in order to fully realize its clinical value.
Here’s what a study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology says about its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects and other health benefits: “In China, Korea, and Japan, a decoction of the dried root without bark of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. has been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatitis, dysmenorrhea, muscle cramping and spasms, and fever for more than 2,000 years.
“[A water/ethanol extract of the root known as total glucosides of peony (TGP)] exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators. … TGP was also reported to have protective effects of cells against oxidative stress. … The anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of TGP provide the therapeutic basis in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.”
