Yes! It also goes by the name Rosa rugosa, as well as Chinese Rose, Maikaika, Eglantine Gall, Rosa Gallica, Bud of Chi, Japanese Rose Flower, Rosae rugosae Flos, and Tomato Rose.

Why are Rose Hips getting so much press?

In recent years, scientific interest in rose hips uses has increased due to its potential to support treatment for disorders related to oxidative stress, including skin disorders, hepatotoxicity, renal disturbances, diarrhea, arthritis, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, obesity, and stress-related mood disorders.

How much Vitamin C is in Rose Hips?

Vitamin C is best known for its antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is able to scavenge damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) to protect the body’s cells and tissues from oxidative damage and dysfunction. Vitamin C also supports healthy immune function.

Vitamin C levels can become depleted from the body during infection. Clinical tests are being conducted to investigate vitamin C as having the potential to mitigate symptoms during future viral outbreaks. The requirement for vitamin C increases with the severity of the infection. Rose hips benefits include high vitamin C content.

Our extract is standardized to 20% vitamin C.

What immune support does it provide?

Rosa rugosa preparations have shown positive effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The polysaccaride-peptides in Rosa rugosa have presented anti-retroviral activity.

Vitamin C is among the most beneficial nutrients for immune support. Studies continue to reveal the growing list of vitamin C benefits to the human body. Most recently, people have used high amounts of vitamin C to protect themselves against severe flu and cold symptoms. Vitamin C encourages the production of lymphocytes and phagocytes that fight infections in the body. The nutrient further protects white blood cells from free radicals.

The herb contains vitamin C, which has shown to be effective in supporting treatment for cold and viral infections and influenza. It may improve the body’s immune function and antimicrobial function and help the body fight back infections. Some scientists also recommend the use of Rose Hips in supporting treatment for Helicobacter pylori, peptic ulcers, and urinary tract infections.

What are its anti-inflammatory properties?

The polyphenols and flavonoids in Rosa rugosa exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. When the body detects harmful stimuli (e.g., pathogens, irritants, or damaged cells), it responds through inflammation of vascular tissues. Many studies on the phytoconstituents and natural compounds that help to alleviate prolonged inflammation recommend consumption of Rose Hips.

Rosa rugosa also has a high content of Galactolipids, the component responsible for generating an anti-inflammatory effect on the joints. The biochemical compounds in the plant inhibit chemicals that trigger inflammation and pain, which is promising for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis support.

What are its antioxidant properties?

ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) are often produced by xanthine oxidase, NADPH oxidase, myeloperoxidase, and electron transport chain. Oxidative stress biomarkers such as HNE and F2-isoprostanes are often elevated in patients with cancer or neurodegenerative diseases. Vitamin C inhibits lipid peroxidation activities by scavenging ROS and free radicals. Laboratory tests reveal that Vitamin C protects cells from potential damage by LPO-derived 2-alkenals.

Rose hips also contains ellagic acid, phenols, Vitamin E, flavonoids, and lycopene that are rich in antioxidants that help to protect the body against cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Anti-Aging Properties

2019 study published in the Journal of Food Biochemistry indicates that Rosa rugosa (Rose Hips) offers significant health benefits and suggests that Rosa rugosa aqueous polyphenol (RAP) could potentially be developed as a bioactive product that demonstrates anti-aging properties.

What mood support does it provide?

Early-stage research suggests that Rosa rugosa may have a role in helping to attenuate depression. This role would be a novel approach to both the understanding and treatment of the condition. Researchers have found that the tilirosides in Rosa rugosa extract may help improve synaptic efficiency in the hippocampus. This part of the brain, best known for memory and learning, also has a key role in mood. Improving synaptic efficiency in the hippocampus appears to reduce depression.

Rosa rugosa extract can help reduce neuroinflammation. Reducing neuro-inflammation also helps with improving mood.

Stress and sleep deprivation can be a causative factor in depression. In rat studies, Rosa rugosa extract has effectively showed potential for use as an anti-stress therapy to treat sleep deprivation. The phenylethanoid glycosides in Rosa exhibited antagonism of the 5-HT6 receptor and resulting inhibition of cAMP activity. The study’s authors conclude that the decreases in survival and in memory and cognitive function caused by sleep deprivation stress are improved in a concentration-dependent manner by orally ingested Rosa extract. This finding suggests that Rosa rugosa extract should be considered as a potential treatment for stress.

What cardiovascular support does it provide?

Heart disease is among the leading causes of death around the world today. Common factors that contribute to heart diseases include hypertension, high low-density lipoproteins, and low high-density lipoproteins. Rose hips extract has an antihypertensive effect, which is attributed to inhibition of Angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE). Vitamin C significantly reduces low-density lipoprotein and increases good cholesterol, which also helps to protect the body against potential heart diseases.

What are its traditional uses?

Rosa rugosa has been used to symbolize health, beauty, love, and affection. It is among the most romantic gifts for couples around the world. However, more just romance, Rosa rugosa exhibits essential health benefits that have been used since ancient times in Traditional Chinese Medicine to support stomach cleansing, liver nourishment, and blood circulation.

What phytochemicals are in Rosa rugosa?

The buds of Rosa rugosa are rich in phytochemical compounds that attribute to their medicinal value. Rose hips benefits are associated with their ascorbic acid, phenolic content, and healthy fatty acid content, including Vitamin E and Lycopene. Some of its bioactive compounds include:

  • Ellagic acid
  • Polyphenols
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Flavonoids
  • Lycopene

A more complete listing can be found on the Rosa rugosa product page.

Can you describe the plant?

Rosa rugosa is in the Rosaceae family. It is known for its disease resistance and incredible hardiness. Rose hips are the round portion of the rose flower just below the petals. Rose hips contain the seeds of the Rosa rugosa plant. The herb grows up to 2m in height with stout stems and thick branches. Usually orange or reddish in color, rose hips often grow once the petals have bloomed and begun to fall off.
