Holy Basil Tea: It’s the Queen of Herbs for a Reason

Holy Basil Tea - kerala india - Linden Botanicals

Holy Basil tea (also known as Ocimum sanctum and Tulsi) is often called the Queen of Herbs. It’s an amazing, all-natural tea that supports stress relief, blood sugar regulation, and improved respiration.

What Is Holy Basil Tea?

It is an aromatic herb with medicinal properties that help improve your quality of life. Also referred to as Tulsi (in Hindi), the herb belongs to the Ocimum sanctum family. Holy Basil tea grows in Southeast Asia and has been used to support treatment for conditions that include stress, ringworm, bronchitis, dysentery, malaria, and eye illnesses.

Ocimum sanctum contains a variety of bioactive compounds that add therapeutic and nutritional value to our bodies. Some of its nutrients include:

  • Vitamin A & C
  • Zinc
  • Chlorophyll
  • Iron

Below are some of the health benefits of drinking Holy Basil tea.

1.     Stress and Anxiety Relief

Stress results from an increase in cortisol levels in the body. Sources for the increase in cortisol levels include:

  • Physical
  • Chemical
  • Emotional
  • Infection

The tea contains adaptogen properties that help our bodies to adapt to physical stress. Adaptogens also promote mental stability. The herb has been shown to contain anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties comparable to antidepressant drugs such as diazepam.

2.     Respiratory Disorder Support

It contains bioactive immunomodulatory compounds that may support immunity against coughs, common cold, asthma and bronchitis. It also contains expectorant properties that increase the expectoration rate (expelling the phlegm) in productive coughs. People with dry coughs can also sip the tea to suppress the cough due to its antitussive properties.

3.     Blood Sugar Levels Regulation

Holy Basil tea is an excellent alternative for diabetic patients, as it may regulate blood sugar levels. Consuming this tea on a daily basis increases the metabolic process. An increase in metabolism enhances the breakdown of fats and carbohydrates, which helps to ensure that sugars are used to produce energy. Ocimum sanctum also stimulates the secretion of insulin in the body, which regulates sugar levels. Since it lowers serum concentrations of cortisol, the herb also helps to regulate diabetes mellitus induced by corticosteroids.

4.     Protection from Stomach Ulcers

Beyond providing immune support, Holy Basil tea may help to protect your stomach from ulcers. The bioactive compounds may strengthen the stomach’s defense mechanism by:

  • Lowering acid production
  • Increasing the secretion of mucus in the stomach

Pharmaceutical products used to treat peptic ulcers, such as omeprazole and rabeprazole, can cause discomfort and problematic side effects. Since Ocimum is an all-natural extract, the herb is a great alternative.

5.     Arthritis Support

Arthritis is a painful condition that results from swelling of joints. This condition often worsens with age. Sipping this tea may reduce inflammation and relieve joint pain. The herb contains bioactive cinnamic acid compounds that offer anti-inflammatory properties at the affected area.

Besides its range of health benefits, Holy Basil tea is an excellent alternative for those who do not want caffeinated tea. The tea has no proven side effects, as it is purely extracted from a natural herb.
