White Peony Tea Therapeutic Uses – Paeonia Lactiflora, Bai Shao Yao, Garden Peony, Beautiful Healer (Linden Botanicals - www.lindenbotanicals.com)

White peony tea therapeutic uses include supporting the immune system and soothing nerve pain, migraines, and cramps.

It’s time to introduce you to the Beautiful Healer, White Peony, also known as Paeonia lactiflora, garden peony, Bai Shao Yao, and Chinese peony.

What Is White Peony Tea?

An old Chinese proverb says that a woman who consumes the root of the peony every day becomes as beautiful as the Peony flower itself.

The dried root without bark of P. lactiflorahas been used as a medicinal herb in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It was recorded as an essential extract in the Materia Medica during the Han Dynasty (2nd century B.C.E.). The root is dug in summer or autumn from cultivated plants that are 4–5 years old and then cleaned with water.

A decoction of the dried sliced root has been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, hepatitis, dysmenorrhea, muscle cramping and spasms, and chronic fever. White peony tea therapeutic uses have been the subject of recent scientific research concerning its ability to modulate the immune system.

Botanical Description

Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (also named Chinese Peony) is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the family Paeoniaceae with fleshy roots and stout, erect, branched, glabrous annual stems. It can grow up to 60–100 cm tall with large compound leaves 20–40 cm long. The flower buds are large and round, opening into large flowers 8–16 cm diameter, with 5–10 white, pink, or crimson petals and yellow stamens.

The fruit is a capsule with shiny black seeds. When fresh, the roots and seeds of white peony have a faint unpleasant smell and a mucilaginous subacrid taste, with a slight degree of bitterness and astringency. It is native to east Asia and is grown on dry open stony slopes, riverbanks, and sparse woodland edges.

White Peony Traditional Uses

It is said that the ancient Greek healer Paeos used the roots of the white flowering Ranunculaceae plant to heal the gods injured during the Trojan wars. Thereafter, it was known as Paeonia. The root of Paeonia lactiflora has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine as well.

In China, Korea, and Japan, a decoction of the dried root without bark of Paeonia lactiflora has been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatitis, dysmenorrhea, muscle cramping and spasms, and fever for more than 1,200 years.

White peony is considered a blood tonic. It is often sought after as a reducer of skeletal muscle spasms, a soother of the liver, and a moderator of acute reactions. It is thought to help nerve pain, migraine headaches, and stomach cramps. It is also used as a topical treatment for hemorrhoids.

White Peony Therapeutic Uses

The medicinal properties of white peony have been researched and analyzed in over a hundred scientific papers, including in vitro, animal, and human studies. White peony therapeutic uses may include support for a healthy reproductive system, healthy liver, healthy eyes, healthy spleen, healthy kidneys, and good brain health.

The water/ethanol extract of the root contains over 15 components and is known as total glucosides of peony (TGP). TPG has exhibited analgesic, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects in in-vitro and in vivo studies. Further studies will be needed to explain the underlying mechanisms responsible for the unique effects of TGP.

Painful, chronic diseases are on the rise, and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus pose challenges to people who would otherwise lead healthy lives. Chronic reproductive problems such as endometriosis are commonly treated with toxic drugs that attempt to cover up the symptoms but don’t address the root of the issue. White peony therapeutic uses include the treatment of many health issues in a healthy, non-toxic way.
