Good Mood Smoothies Include Healthy Foods
We like to add leafy greens and dark fruits to our smoothies. Leafy greens are packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and high-quality amino acids. Leafy greens include spinach, kale, microgreens, romaine, Swiss chard, collard greens, cabbage, watercress, romaine lettuce, bok choy, and endive.
Dark fruits are important too. For one thing, they’re antioxidants. For another, the purple pigment in dark fruits contains flavonoids, including resveratrol, which can help decrease blood pressure. Resveratrol helps relax the arterial walls, decreases the pressure in the arteries, and promotes better circulation. Dark fruits also contain polyphenols, which can reduce the inflammatory response in the body.
Tip: Want your smoothies to be thicker? Include frozen fruit! Freeze your favorite dark fruits like blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and elderberries (if you choose to include banana, you can freeze it too). You can also freeze your leafy greens in a freezer-safe bag. Just be sure to put your frozen greens into the blender (don’t defrost them before use).
Good Mood Smoothies Include Polygala
Extracts and supplements are herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other healthy ingredients. Healthy smoothie recipes that provide mood support and offer nootropic brain health support often incorporate Polygala extract. As desired, they can also incorporate Vaccinium uliginosum (Bilberry) and Semen cuscutae (Dodder Seed).
Polygala (Yuan Zhi)
Polygala extract is valued for its reputed ability to improve clarity of thought, willpower, motivation, and creative thinking. “Yuan Zhi” translates to “high aspirations.” It’s often recommended for geriatric concerns, as it may improve memory and protect against cognitive decline.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine terms, Polygala tenuifolia balances the qi of the heart and kidneys, supporting emotional stability and promoting healthy mood. Polygala extract also appears to have immune system-supporting properties and is also often used to reduce inflammation and promote a healthy respiratory system. Read the Polygala FAQ.
Vaccinium (Bilberry) (optional)
Bilberry extract is also known as brain berry extract. It’s often used as support for the treatment of cognitive deficits and may enhance learning, memory, navigational skills, balance, and coordination. Its compounds seem to jumpstart the brain, helping aging neurons communicate. Read the Bilberry FAQ.
Semen cuscutae (Tu Si Zi) (optional)
Semen cuscutae extract may support the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Its properties include adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidant, anti-senescence, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and osteogenic. Read the Semen cuscutae FAQ.
Healthy smoothie recipes that provide mood support and help to improve brain health, learning, memory, and focus often also include the following optional supplements:
Omega Oil: Research suggests omega-3 fatty acids may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and may have a positive effect on gradual memory loss linked to aging.
Phosphatidylserine: It’s an important chemical that improves mental function. It’s also what the brain uses to incorporate omega-3s.
Flaxseed: It contains Omega-3s (which support memory), lignans (antioxidants), and fiber, and it may help fight heart disease, diabetes, and breast cancer.
Protein Powder: It’s an easy and convenient source of high-quality protein.
