Stone breaker Chanca Piedra tea (Phyllanthus niruri) is an herbal supplement that provides all-natural kidney stone support. It’s commonly called “stone breaker.” Chanca Piedra is a tropical plant in the family Phyllanthaceae and is native to the Amazon rainforest in Peru.

Chanca Piedra benefits include support for kidney stone prevention and kidney stone elimination, as well as support for the treatment of hepatitis B, diabetes, gout, gallstones, immune system health, and digestive problems.

Stone Breaker Chanca Piedra

Chanca Piedra is well-known for its use in helping to dissolve kidney stones. It helps decrease urinary oxalate and uric acid levels, thus reducing the risk of kidney stones. Drinking Chanca Piedra tea won’t technically break the kidney stone. Instead, it stops the accretion of calcium in the kidney, smooths the spiky surface of the stone, stops spasms, eases pain, and reduces the size of the stone so it can pass easily through your urine stream.

Research suggests it may also protect the liver, fight infections, and lower oxidative stress and inflammation. It may also effectively block the formation of calcium oxalate crystals, the compounds that make up kidney stones.

Chanca Piedra is often used to relieve pain, reduce muscle spasms, and block inflammation. One of the active compounds in Chanca Piedra, geraniin, appears to inhibit neurotransmitters that relay pain signals, and studies suggest it may be more powerful as aspirin or acetaminophen in relieving pain.

Stomach Ulcers

Studies show Chanca Piedra may effectively support treatment of gastric (stomach) infections, including helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a type of bacteria that’s associated with the formation of ulcers. Chanca Piedra doesn’t interfere with Lactobacillus acidophilus and other beneficial bacteria in the gut unlike antibiotics and other medications often used to treat H. pylori.

Liver Protection

Due to its antioxidant content, Chanca Piedra may improve liver function and help protect the liver from cellular damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable compounds that can cause damage when they build up in your body in high levels. Studies are focusing on its ability to safely and effectively support treatment for hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Cardiovascular Health and Blood Sugar Balance

Studies indicate Phyllanthus niruri may help to suppress a rise in blood glucose and help treat type 2 diabetes. Geraniin is also a compound linked with reduction in high blood pressure. In one study, people with high blood pressure who drank Chanca Piedra tea showed a significant reduction in blood pressure, along with an increase in sodium excretion.

Where to Find Stone Breaker Chanca Piedra

Chanca Piedra grows in the Amazon jungle of Peru. However, the common name “Chanca Piedra” is often applied to two other plants: Phyllanthus amarus from India and Phyllanthus urinaria from southeast Asia.

If “Chanca Piedra” is grown southeast Asia or India, it’s a different plant than the highly beneficial Phyllanthus niruri grown in Peru. It’s a different species grown in different terroir. Make sure you’re getting wildcrafted Chanca Piedra from Peru, and make sure you’re buying from a reputable supplier. Only buy your Chanca Piedra from a company you trust.

Stone Breaker Chanca Piedra Tea vs. Capsules

Lots of suppliers sell Stone Breaker Chanca Piedra in capsule form. However, capsules don’t contain anywhere near the amount of Chanca Piedra you need. As an example, three capsules equate to roughly 1.5 grams, which gives you about 12% of the daily amount of Phyllanthus niruri you need.

Chanca Piedra tea or extract is a much better option than capsules. The tea and extract incorporate key phytoconstituents in a critically important way. In addition, drinking 32 ounces of Chanca Piedra tea each day helps you achieve your recommended daily water intake. (Read more on this subject here.)
