Chanca Piedra tea health benefits include kidney stone, digestive health, liver health, immune health, and Lyme support.
Chanca Piedra tea, also known as Phyllanthus niruri herbal tea, is made from an all-natural herb native to the Amazon region of Peru. It’s a nootropic, an adaptogen, and an antioxidant. With 100+ identified bioactive compounds, it may offer more health benefits than any other plant in the world.
Studies show Chanca Piedra tea has powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and biofilm-breaking qualities. It may also offer significant immune support and relief of cold and flu symptoms, as well as help the immune and lymphatic systems combat viruses and bacteria.
Chanca Piedra Tea Health Benefits
Phyllanthus niruri (Chanca Piedra) is our favorite herbal tea — and it’s the reason we started the company. The health benefits are immense.
Kidney Stone and Gallstone Support
Of all the Phyllanthus niruri herbal tea benefits, kidney stone support is probably the best known. Chanca Piedra tea is often called “stone breaker” for its potential to provide kidney stone support. Scientists worldwide have studied the use of Chanca Piedra in eliminating kidney stones.
The herb contains alkalizing properties that can help prevent kidney stones and gallstones from occurring in the first place. This alkaline nature helps to neutralize the acid from the kidney. Once this process occurs, the hard deposits of acidic salts that concentrate in urine are broken down.
To be clear, drinking Chanca Piedra tea or incorporating Chanca Piedra extract into one’s diet won’t technically break the kidney stone. Instead, it stops the accretion of calcium in the kidney, smooths the spiky surface of the stone, stops spasms, eases pain, and reduces the size of the stone so it can pass easily through the urine stream. Chanca Piedra also builds a defense system, which reduces the reoccurrence of kidney stones.
Chanca Piedra has several helpful mechanisms that block the formation of oxalate crystals in the kidneys. For example, it recruits glycosaminoglycans, blending them into the crystal matrix. The result in smaller accretions vs. true crystals, which are larger and more jagged.
Chanca Piedra is also a natural diuretic and a smooth muscle relaxant specific to the renal system. It helps to stop the spasms related to the pain of the stone. Ultimately, the stone is passed with less pain or in some cases no pain.
In a one scientific study, 56 people suffering from kidney stones were given a dosage of 4.5 grams of Chanca Piedra daily. After 12 weeks, two-thirds of the participants were no longer suffering from kidney stones. In addition, kidney stone size and number decreased for all of the participants.
Chanca Piedra Tea for Lyme Disease Support
Of all the Chanca Piedra tea benefits, one of the most valuable is the herbal tea’s ability to provide support for Lyme disease. Linden Botanicals owner Michael Van der Linden suffered from Lyme disease for almost four years. While he suffered from Lyme disease, he got a kidney stone.
Through in-depth research, Michael learned about a plant called Phyllanthus niruri from Peru. Phyllanthus niruri is from the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, and it’s known for supporting kidney health and helping to ease the elimination of kidney stones. Phyllanthus niruri originally helped him with a kidney stone (the plant’s other name, Chanca Piedra, literally means “stone breaker”).
He began drinking the tea three times a day. His research also suggested that the all-natural tea made from the Phyllanthus niruri plant might also be helpful for Lyme disease, which can affect every system and get into the central nervous system.
Phyllanthus niruri is an antiviral, antimalarial, and antibacterial that is known as the great “unmasker” known for helping to alert the immune system to hiding pathogens.
During Michael’s third year with Lyme disease, he learned about Chanca Piedra tea from the Amazon. Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) tea is commonly used for kidney stone support. Research suggests it may be one of the best herbs for Lyme disease support. Phyllanthus may be able to block replication of the Lyme disease spirochete by interfering with the outer surface proteins that enable Borrelia burgdorferi to evade the immune system. Ultimately, the herbal tea provided kidney stone support and Lyme disease support due to its ability to inhibit Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
Michael read hundreds of articles about Phyllanthus niruri and drank the Phyllanthus niruri herbal tea. His battle with and recovery from Lyme disease is the reason he started Linden Botanicals. The very first product Linden Botanicals sold was Phyllanthus niruri herbal tea from Peru.
Phyllanthus niruri (Chanca Piedra) is one of three carefully selected botanicals in our proprietary Persister Desister Lyme Support Kits, alongside Cistus incanus and Cryptolepis sanguinolenta. Each herb was chosen for its unique strengths: Phyllanthus supports liver and kidney detox while offering antimicrobial and antioxidant protection, Cistus incanus helps disrupt biofilms and defend against pathogens, and Cryptolepis provides potent antibacterial activity.
Together, these three all-natural extracts create a powerful, synergistic approach designed to target persister bacteria, ease the burden of chronic Lyme symptoms, and support whole-body resilience.
Here at Linden Botanicals, we’re written a lot about Michael’s Lyme disease journey. You can read more about Michael’s battle with Lyme Disease here. In addition, our free Lessons from the Darkness e-book chronicles the lessons he learned and the active steps he took to help rid his body of this terrible disease.
Chanca Piedra Tea and Liver Health
Everything you put into your body—from food and drinks to medications and environmental toxins—eventually passes through the liver’s security checkpoint. The liver filters, processes, and detoxifies these substances, deciding what to store, what to transform for use, and what to eliminate. Because it works around the clock, the liver is one of the most important organs for maintaining overall wellness.
Instead of chasing the latest fad detox diets, which often overpromise and underdeliver, consider steady, sustainable ways to keep your liver functioning efficiently. Supporting your liver’s natural filtration process can improve digestion, increase energy levels, and reduce the overall toxic burden on your body.
This is where Phyllanthus niruri (Chanca Piedra) shines. Long used in traditional medicine for its liver-protective properties, Chanca Piedra is often referred to as a natural “liver tonic.” Drinking just one cup of Chanca Piedra tea each day provides phytoconstituents that:
- Promote healthy bile flow, which aids digestion and helps the body break down fats more effectively.
- Support detoxification enzymes, assisting the liver in neutralizing and removing harmful compounds.
- Protect liver cells from oxidative stress, reducing the risk of damage caused by free radicals.
- Encourage balanced liver function, which benefits both metabolic health and overall vitality.
As a bonus, Chanca Piedra tea is hydrating and caffeine-free, making it easy to incorporate into a daily routine. Over time, this simple habit can go a long way toward protecting your liver, supporting digestion, and enhancing your body’s natural ability to detoxify.
At Linden Botanicals, we provide high-quality Chanca Piedra tea and extract sourced to deliver maximum potency—ensuring your liver gets the consistent support it needs to keep you healthy.
Liver Support and High Blood Sugar Support
The antioxidant properties of Chanca Piedra may improve the functions of the liver. It can protect the liver from cellular damage caused by free radicals. In test-tube studies, Chanca Piedra provided substantial support for stomach ulcers by killing the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. Animal studies also show that the herb may provide support for people suffering from Hepatitis B.
Chanca Piedra tea contains antioxidants that may improve fasting in blood sugar levels.
Herbal Tea vs. Capsules
When it comes to Phyllanthus niruri (Chanca Piedra), not all forms deliver the same value or effectiveness. While capsules are widely available, they often fall short in both dosage and bioavailability compared to traditional tea or high-quality extract.
The Dosage Problem with Capsules
Most capsule products on the market contain only small amounts of raw plant material. To put this into perspective: three capsules typically provide about 1.5 grams of Chanca Piedra. That’s only around 12% of the daily amount many studies and traditional practices suggest is needed for meaningful support. In other words, relying on capsules makes it nearly impossible to consume enough Chanca Piedra to experience its full benefits.
Cost vs. Value
Capsules are also often more expensive per gram than herbal teas or extracts. Since the dosage is lower, you pay more while receiving significantly less. Over time, this makes capsules a less practical—and less effective—choice for those seeking sustained wellness benefits.
Why Herbal Tea and Extract Work Better
Chanca Piedra tea and liquid extract provide access to the full range of phytoconstituents—the naturally occurring plant compounds responsible for the herb’s health-promoting effects. These include lignans, flavonoids, and tannins, which support liver health, kidney detoxification, and overall immune resilience. Unlike capsules, tea and extracts deliver these compounds in a bioavailable form that the body can more readily absorb and use.
The Hydration Bonus
Another overlooked advantage of tea is hydration. Drinking 32 ounces of Chanca Piedra tea daily not only ensures you’re consuming a therapeutic quantity of the herb, but it also helps you reach your recommended daily water intake. For those supporting kidney health or detoxification, hydration is especially critical—making tea a dual-purpose solution.
