Cryptolepis Herb: Activity Against B. burgdorferi

Cryptolepis Herb - Sold by Linden Botanicals

Cryptolepis herb provides Lyme disease support and has the potential to completely eradicate Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi). The implications of a recent study show that Cryptolepis sanguinolenta has the significant potential to improve treatment of persistent Lyme disease.

What Is Cryptolepis Herb?

Cryptolepis sanguinolenta, a medicinal plant native to West Africa, has been recognized for centuries for its diverse therapeutic properties. Modern scientific research has further unveiled the impressive health benefits of Cryptolepis, also called Yellow Root, highlighting its potential in various areas of human health. This article explores two studies published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to shed light on the remarkable health advantages of Cryptolepis.

What Are Its Antimicrobial and Antimalarial Properties?

Cryptolepis shows significant antimicrobial effects against various pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The plant’s bioactive compounds, such as cryptolepine, have been found to possess potent antimicrobial properties, making Cryptolepis a promising natural alternative to conventional antimicrobial agents.

Cryptolepis has also shown notable antimalarial activity. One study explored the effectiveness of Cryptolepis against Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for malaria. The research revealed that Cryptolepis herb exhibited significant antiplasmodial activity, inhibiting the growth and development of the malaria parasite. These findings support the traditional use of Cryptolepis in treating malaria and suggest its potential as a source for developing new antimalarial drugs.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Cryptolepis Herb

Cryptolepis is also known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as demonstrated in another recent study. The research investigated the protective effects of Cryptolepis extract against oxidative stress and inflammation-induced damage. The results showed that Cryptolepis extract possessed potent antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress markers. Moreover, the extract effectively suppressed inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes.

These antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties suggest that Cryptolepis may have a potential role in managing oxidative stress-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and certain malignancies. Furthermore, its anti-inflammatory effects could be beneficial in conditions characterized by chronic inflammation, including arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Cryptolepis Herb Lyme Disease Support

The properties and traditional uses of Cryptolepis suggest it may offer benefits in addressing Lyme disease.

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi transmitted through tick bites, can lead to various symptoms, including fatigue, joint pain, neurological issues, and inflammation. Cryptolepis possesses several properties that could potentially be beneficial for individuals with Lyme disease:

  1. Antimicrobial Activity: Cryptolepis has been studied for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects, which may help combat bacterial infections. While more research is needed to determine its specific efficacy against Borrelia burgdorferi, its antimicrobial properties suggest a potential role in inhibiting bacterial growth and supporting the body’s immune response.
  2. Anti-inflammatory Effects: Lyme disease often triggers chronic inflammation in the body. Cryptolepis has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation and alleviate associated symptoms like joint pain and swelling.
  3. Immune System Support: Cryptolepis is believed to support immune function, which is crucial for individuals with Lyme disease. By enhancing immune responses, Cryptolepis may assist in the body’s ability to fight off infections and support recovery.

According to a recent scientific study published in Frontiers in Medicine, data shows seven herbal medicines are highly active in test tubes against Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi), the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, compared with the control antibiotics, doxycycline and cefuroxime. Of the seven herbal medicines, only Cryptolepis sanguinolenta extract completely eradicated B. burgdorferi.

The seven herbal medicines studied are Cryptolepis sanguinolenta, Cistus incanus, Juglans nigra (Black walnut), Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed), Artemisia annua (Sweet wormwood), Uncaria tomentosa (Cat’s claw), and Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap).

In the study, only Cryptolepis extract completely eradicated B. burgdorferi, whereas doxycycline, cefuroxime, and the other active herbs did not eradicate B. burgdorferi stationary phase cells. Cryptolepis extract has traditionally been used to support treatment of malaria and the tick-borne infection Babesia.

The implications of this study are far reaching, as they show that Cryptolepis has the potential to improve treatment of persistent Lyme disease and suggest the need for additional laboratory and clinical studies regarding the extract’s active constituents and ability to effectively eradicate B. burgdorferi in vitro and in vivo.
